        SLOUGH CYCLEPATHS PROPOSALS

Dear Sir/Madam

Enclosed is the Friends of the Earth updated proposals for a network of cyclepaths in Slough.

The report was compiled by cycling members of the group with comments from S. Bucks CTC (Cycle Touring Club).

In many British and European towns, seperate dedicated cyclepaths are proving a successful contributor to reducing traffic congestion, accidents, pollution, car parking problems noise and destruction of the environment. Slough has similar flat topology to places like Cambridge in England and Munster in Germany which have extensive heavilly used networks of cyclepaths.

In 1993 less than 0.5% of the money spent on transport by Berkshire C.C. is going on the cyclist. We feel this imbalance needs redressing. We suggest next year you spend all of Sloughs road building allocation on cyclepaths and road safety to make up for 60 years of the cyclist being ignored and getting less than 1 % of the budget. If this was done most of the network would be complete in one year and Slough would begin attracting people away from their cars.

A network of cyclepaths was submitted by local CTC members to SloughCouncil in 1986. It was adopted by their Policy and Resources Committee and incorporated into the Local Plan. It has also been in BCCs Transport and Policy Program, however since 1986 just 4% of the network has been funded and built.

Enclosed is an updated network which is generally speaking full of cheap and easy to implement pathways.

We request the council to make all the footpaths mentioned into adopted footpaths if they are not already adopted.

We suggest you take down all the preferred cycle route signposts put up in 1991 as they are ineffective. The ones that direct you immediately on to a proper cyclepath could be retained.

All cyclepath signposts should indicate destination, cyclepath name (if any) and distance.

Reducing the wait times for pedestrians and cyclists to 5 secs at pelican crossings  would encourage more people to use them and reduce cycle journey times making cycling more attractive.

Shared cycle/footpaths should have markings at regular intervals on the tarmac or on signs fixed to lamp posts that illustrate a cycle one side and pedestrians the other, like the path in Godolphin playing fields. Also the occasional sign saying cyclists give way to pedestrians and give old people plenty of space.

The 1 to 10 priority figure given is based on whether (10=highest priority):

The path is likely to attract significant numbers of cyclists if built/improved.

It is likely to bring a reduction in road safety accidents on roads nearby.

It is a strategic route eg parallel to an A-road.

It serves an important residential or commercial area.

It links up existing paths and makes them more useful.

It is attractive as a leisure/recreational/nature route.

There are impending developments likely to wipe out the possiblity of a low cost cycle route       in the future.

It is safe from a road safety and personal security point of view.

It can be easily and cheaply implemented.

 5) Oldway Lane bridge over M4, past sludge beds, Thames Water road, Manor Farm, over county boundary, Common Rd Dorney.

Useful at weekends but dangerous weekdays because of Thames Water's lorries going past. Would have to be widened to accomadate cyclists and lorries. Would be affected by Flood Relief Scheme. Cost œ30 000. Priority 4

6)  Hogfair Lane near Lincoln Hatch Lane, FP past school, Lower Britwell Rd (wide verge and Slip Rd), Long Furlong Drive

FP needs surfacing and better security cutting down hedges to 3 ft, better lighting. Cost œ1000. Priority 5

7a) Lynch Hill Lane near Cocksherd Woods, new shared foot/cyclepath along bottom of Lynch Hill Valley Open Space, Long Furlong Drive.

Leisure route. Mudtrack needs surfacing, lighting and signposting.  Priority 8. Cost œ10 000.

7b) Cross Long Furlong Drive, new shared foot/cyclepath through Fenner Brockway Park, Whittaker Rd.

Leisure route. Mudtrack needs surfacing, lighting and signposting. Adventure playground. Note this grassland contains a few rare wildflowers on the unimproved grass slopes. Any work should be done in conjunction with local wildlife groups.  Priority 8. Cost œ8000

7c) Cross Whittaker Rd, Littlebrook Av.

Leisure route alongside Haymill Woods nature reserve. Priority 6. Cost œ200.

8) Littlebrook Av, FP, Blumfield Crescent, FP no. 51, Haymill Rd.

Existing. Needs signposting, lighting. Cost œ200. Priority 6.

 9) Littlebrook Av, new connecting FP needed to Haymill Centre, Burnham

Lane.

 Priority 4. Cost œ200.

9a) Littlebrook Av, new connecting FP to Altwood Close, Burnham

Lane.

 Priority 4. Cost œ200.

 10) Littlebrook Av, FP, across Burnham Lane, Station Rd, station approach, Burnham Station.

Existing FP.  The triangular junction here needs improving to make it easier for cars, cyclists and most importantly pedestrians going to Burnham Station to use. Suggest that the southern slip road that connects Burnham

Lane to the station approach rd be blocked off and grassed over. The northern junction of Station Rd and Burnham Lane should be remodelled to give a right angle and islands incorporated to make it easier for pedestrians and cyclists to cross Burnham Lane. Where pavements are missing they should be added eg on the station approach rd, and visibility sight lines improved by cutting back vegetation. This measure would make Burnham Station more pleasant to use. Priority 9. Cycle and pedestrian crossing, road safety improvements and environmental enhancements cost œ100 000.

 11) Littlebrook Av,  FP across southern tip of Haymill Nature Reserve and Thames Water open space, Burnham Lane near petrol garage, or near squash court.

12) Everitts Corner, Station  Rd, Cippenham Recreation Ground, FP no. 2a, Burnham Lane, under railway, Buckingham Av.

Everitts corner needs a lot of improvements to make it easier and safer to cross for cyclists, pedestrians aswell as cars. It could be made more visually attractive and pleasanter to shop  at, The car parking should be rationalised in one place and problems of parking on the pavement addressed.

The slip rd on the SE side could be closed off and create a nice paved or grassed area with cycle parking racks. This would enhance the appearance of the area and improve road safety by reducing conflicting vehicle movements. Priority 7. Cost of cycle facilities, road safety and environmental enhancements œ200 000.

12a) Buckingham Av, Weston Rd, FP, Greystoke Rd.

The corner of Weston Rd and Buckingham Av is always dangerous because of lorries parking and reversing.

The footpath from Greystoke Rd to Weston Rd is threatened with closure by Slough Estates despite the fact that it is used by many pedestrians and cyclists to get to work every day. It is vital to keep footpaths like this open at all times. Closing off a footpath that gives someone a ten minute short cut to work is more likely to make them use a car rather than them walk around the fence taking 30 mintes. Cost œ200. Priority 10.

 13) Cippenham Recreation Ground, FP no. 2b Brook Path,<access from Brook Cres>, across Bath Rd.

Existing. Security needs improving replacing fencing, lighting. Needs an island in Bath Rd to make it easier to cross. Priority 7.

13a) Brook Path FP  no.2b, FP no.2c, Iona Crescent.Existing FP. Needs signposting. Cost œ200. Priority 4

14) Across Bath Rd, Brook Path FP no.3a, Bower Way.

Stream could be opened up in parts to make route more attractive. Some sections of the route are dangerous because it is also used for car access and there is no seperate pavement. Cost œ10 000. Priority 7.

 15) Across Bower Way, FP no.3b Brook Path, Lower Cippenham Lane.

Exisitng needs signposting. Cost œ300. Priority 7.

16) Cippenham Green, across Lower Cippenham Lane, Millstream Lane

Existing, just needs signposting. Priority 8. Cost œ200.

 17) Millstream Lane, FP adjacent to ditch and north-south hedgerow.

Leisure route. Existing mudtrack, needs signposting surfacing and lighting. Hedgerows which are hundreds of years old are very valuable for their diverse wildlife and should be well protected. Grass verge and possibly low trelis between foot/cyclepath and the hedgerow. Priority 8. Cost œ3000.

 18) FP along east-west hedgerow (the Great Hedge), turn into FP along main east-west hedgerow and ditch, junction Wood

Lane and Telford Drive.

52) Furnival Housing Co-op, Furnival Av, cross Farnham Rd, Essex Av, Cinder Track

Existing. Needs signposting Furnival Co-op end. Slip road and garage entrance make Furnival Av/ Farnham Rd junction extremely dangerous. Slip  road could be closed and a large paved area created for the shops to put stalls on. The Furnival Av garage entrance could be closed off. Bollards and the scheme of raised kerbs and grass verges extended from the last house in Furnival Av to the corner of Farnham Rd to reduce the number of pavement crossings and parking on the pavement. Simply walking along the pavement here on a Saturday morning is very hazardous and you are likely to get knocked down. Wait time for pedstrian activated lights should be reduced. Cost œ50 000. Priority 7

53) Northborough Rd, FP across Faraday Recreation Ground, Faraday Rd

61) Cinder Track, Belfast Av, Northampton Av, through bollards, Buckingham Av East, cross Farnham Rd by traffic lights. Existing. Needs signposting. Phasing of traffic lights need changing to allow pedestrians and cyclists to cross this busy junction. During rush hour so many cars jump the red lights that there is no opportunity for pedestrians to cross. Cost œ300. Priority 8

62) Edinburgh Av, westside of Farnham Rd shared foot/cyclepath, past Buckingham Av, <access from end of Malton Av>, <access from end of Ajax av>, cross Farnham Rd by pelican, eastside Farnham Rd shared foot/cyclepath, <access from Salt Hill Way>, <access from Salt Hill Drive>, past DSS, A4 Bath Rd northside <access from Windmill Rd>, <access from Hartland Close>, past Salt Hill Park, junction Bath Rd Stoke Poges Lane

The pavement is largely wide enough to accomadate shared use with adequate marking. The area of the slip road between Salt Hill Way and Salt Hill Drive needs remodelling to make safer and accomadate cyclists. At present cyclists riding on this section of the Farnham Rd are squeezed up to the kerbstone if a lorry chooses to overtake a cyclist whilst going past the  traffic islands, it could easily be fatal. Cost œ10 000. Priority 8.

Priority 9

68) Northside of Old High St A4, cross at pelican, through bollards to Burlington Rd, Burlington Av, through grounds of tower blocks, Chalvey Park, new island outside police station to cross Windsor Rd, through gates  St Marys Cemetary, Church St, Osbourne St, Hencroft St, FP no.35b, Alpha St South, through bollards, Alpha St North, across St Laurence Way, Merton Rd, FP no.64, new island to cross Yew Tree Rd, through bollards, Upton Rd, FP by Gurney House, Lascelles Playing fields, Lascelles

Rd.

New island outside police station to cross Windsor Rd. The newly built island in Bath Rd near college entrance is far too small to accomadate the volume of pedestrians let alone pedestrians push chairs and cyclists. Pressing the button should activate both halfs of the pelican with a 5 second delay between them as pedestrians do not wish to cross one side of the carriagway and then admire the view from the centre they wish to cross from one side of the A4 to the other. Or suggest replace the split pelican with one that crosses both directions of traffic in one go. New island Windsor rd. New island Yew Tree Rd. Cost œ50 000. Priority 9

69) Gurney House, Lascelles Playing fields, new island to cross Upton Court Rd, western entrance to Upton Court Park car park, changing rooms, new path running 30m inside Upton Court Park parallel to Upton Court Rd, eastern exit of park, southside of Upton Court Rd shared foot/cyclcpath, Southside London Rd shared foot/cyclepath, slip rd, new island to cross London Rd, northside of London Rd shared foot/cyclepath, westside of Langley High St shared foot/cyclepath, Ives Rd, Langley Memorial Ground, cross Langley High St at pelican, Langley shops

Leisure route and strategic route paralle to A4. New island to cross Upton Court Rd. New path running 30m inside Upton Court Park parallel to Upton Court Rd. Reduce height of hedge to 3ft to improve openess and security of Upton Court Park. New island to cross London Rd. Cost œ90 000. Priority 8

70) Grampian Way, footbridge over junction 5 roundabout.

 Existing.Not very secure. Cost œ0. Priority 4

71) Farnham Royal Sports Field, Park Road, FP by cricket ground, Church Rd

Existing, needs signposting, surfacing, lighting and security improvements. New island needed to cross Park Rd. Cost œ20 000.  Priority 5

72) Church Rd, Cinder Track - FP no.24a, cross Cumberland Av, Cinder Track - FP no.24b, cross Essex Av, Cinder Track - FP no.24c, <access from Granville Av>, <access from Hampshire Av>, <access from Gloucester Av>,<access from Warrington Av>, cross Sheffield Rd, Cinder Track - FP no.24d, shared foot/cyclepath across Godolphin Playing Fields, Godolphin Rd, Woodland Av, new path direct across Sikh Temple car park, subway under railway, paths through Salt Hill Park, Bath Rd near Montem Lane

Mostly existing. Tarmac gap needs filling Cumberland Av. Path currently goes around Sikh Temple car park a direct route across it would be more visible and secure (the land for the current path and verge could be swopped for the land for a new path, which would be a net gain for the temple). Where the Cinder Track crosses the end of a road e.g. Hampshire Av, there should be bollards to protect the cyclepath as cars sometimes drive up to the end quite fast and don't look out for cyclists. The school entrance in Gloucester Av could similarly have a road hump before and after the cyclepath to slow vehicles. The pelican lights on Sheffield Rd should have a shorter wait period - people impatient with waiting cross before the lights have changed, putting themselves at risk. The grocery shop owner could be politely asked to reduce the height of the wall he recently built here to give cyclist coming along the cyclepath from Belfast Av clearer sightlines. Cars pulling out from this shop layby can cause it to be a dangerous crossing area - shortening the pelican wait time would improve it. Vegetation along the Cinder track needs to be constantly cut back particularly through Salt Hill Park - suggest the council create a 2m grass verge either side of path in Salt Hill Park there should be regular planned maintainence. Cost œ2000. Priority 10

73) Cinder Track FP no.24a, FP no.55, Cornwall Av, Wiltshire Av, Stafford Av, FP no.77 by St Anthonys School, new island to cross Farnham Rd, garage forecourt, Penzance Spur, Bridport Spur, Long Readings Lane

Existing the two footpaths need resufacing and security improvements. Cost œ2000. Priority 9

74) Cinder Track FP no.24c, new FP through Godolphin School ground south of schoolbuilding, Granville Playing Fields

Informally used at present. Cost œ2000. Priority 6.

74a) Cinder Track FP no.24c, remove fence and and create path through ex-garage forecourt area back of Granville Av alongside proposed Islamic Centre, FP back of Granville Av,  Granville Playing Fields, Kirkwall Spur, Lerwick Drive

Existing apart from fence needs to be taken down. Cost œ0. Priority 9

74b) Kirkwall Spur, Lerwick Drive, Park School new housing estate, FP, Stoke Poges Lane

Under consideration? Cost œ0. Priority 10.

74c) Park School new housing estate, Mildenhall Rd

Under consideration? Cost œ0. Priority 10

74d) Kirkwall Spur, new shared foot/cyclepath diagonally southwest across Granville Playing Fields to Waterbeach Rd exit

Existing mudtrack needs surfacing, lighting and signposting. Cost œ4000. Priority 9

75) Shared foot/cyclepath across Godolphin Playing Fields, new shared foot/cyclepath to the pond, exit park into Woodland Av, cross Woodland Av near width restrictions, new path taking a straight line through the Sikh Temple car park, under foot tunnel to Salt Hill Park

New shared foot/cyclpath to the pond could go one of three routes: (i) From a point halfway across the Godolphin Rd - Belfast Av cycle/footpath i.e. near the childrens play area, over the existing mud track and join onto the end of the path that goes past the ex-lido the gardens of Baylis house and then over a bridge i.e at the intersection of FP no. 23b. (ii) From a point halfway across the Godolphin Rd - Belfast Av cycle/footpath i.e. near the childrens play area, over the mud track up to the Whitby Road barrier entrance, then a new path to the pond under the newly installed lighting running alongside the stream. (iii) From a point halfway across the Godolphin Rd - Belfast Av cycle/footpath i.e. near the childrens play area, over the mud track to join up to the end point of the tree lined path that runs from the pond midway through the park.

The exit into Woodland Av could be the existing one which need improved sightlines,  or better still formalise the gap in the hedge by the width restriction bollards as the traffic travels slower at this point and is easier to see

The new path taking a straight line through the Sikh Temple car park would be much more visible and secure than the existing one that goes round behind a wall. If the land of the existing path and verge were swopped for a straight line path pedestrians and cyclist would get a better path and the Sikh Temple a few more car parking spaces. Costœ15 000. Priority 9

75a) Woodland Av, nature trial through open space and along stream at back of Lake Av, possible link to Whitby Rd Trading Estate.

Existing mud track. NB Harris and Panasonic keen to sponsor. Cost œ3000. Priority 6

76) Baylis Park, Farm Lane FP no.23b, cross junction Oatlands Drive and Stoke Poges Lane, FP back of houses in Hawthorn Cres

76a) FP back of houses in Hawthorn Cres, Cemetary, Crematorium, Stoke Rd. Cyclists to walk. Security of area around SW gate needs improving. Cost œ500. Priority 5

76b) FP back of houses in Hawthorn Cres, link via open space to new Lisborough Way estate, Stoke Rd

Cost œ3000. Priority 7. Providing cyclists with a safe alternative to Elliman Av would be useful.

76c) Lisborough Way, through bollards, Shackleton Rd, Elliman Av

Existing. Needs signposting. Cost œ100. Priority 7.

 77) Baylis Park FP from pond to Carmathen Rd entrance, Carmathen Rd, Stoke Poges Lane, cross at pelican crossing, Belgrave Road, Shackleton Rd, through bollards, Queens Rd, Grays Rd, Stoke Gardens, Stoke Rd

Baylis Park FP from pond to Carmathen Rd entrance - security could be improved by moving lido fence back 20m closer to filled in lido and removing some of the hedges so that the footpath is not so closed in by hedges and there is more open space. Shacklton Rd - Queens Rd bollards kerb needs dropping. Signposting to and from Station. Wait time of pelican in Stoke Rd needs reducing to 5 secs.  Cost œ2000. Priority 10

78) Junction Bath Rd and Montem Lane, FP behind Ice Arena alongside stream through Montem Recreation Ground <access from Seymour Rd via Bridge>, Newberry Way, new island (already budgeted) to cross Church St, shared foot/cyclepath southside of Church St Chalvey, shared foot/cyclepath westside of High St Chalvey, new island to cross High St Chalvey, Spackmans Way, White Hart Lane, Slough - Windsor Cyclepath FP no.32

Bridge to Seymour Rd needs repair. Slope needed to Seymour Rd. Although it sounds elaborate it would be cheap to implement two paths through Montem Recreation Ground. (i) upgrade the mud track by the stream to a gravel path for those that want to enjoy the stream and (ii) use the high level path by the side of the Arena building, short 20m new path, then the SW edge of the car park tarmac repainted as a path. The second is more visible and secure. Also to improve security cut down shrubery along FP alonside stream behind ice arena. Light unlit parts. Dangerous area at present but sensible planning could make it pleasant wildlife area. Cost œ12 000. Priority 10

79) White Hart Lane, FP no.32, under M4, Slough-Windsor cyclepath alongside railway, under relief rd, cross borough boundary, FP no.5, under railway<access from Common Lane Eton>, FP no 9 alongside easside of railway, cross Eton Wick Rd, FP no.21 alongside railway,FP no.1 River Thames Towpath, Brocas St Eton

79a) Windsor Rd, Ragstone Rd, allotment road, FP no.33 under railway, White Hart Rd

Possible to use at present when the allotments are open. If the allotments were re-fenced it could be open permanently. Needs signposting. Cost œ3000. Priority 5

79b) Slough - Windsor cycleroute, Common Lane, Slough Rd Eton.

Existing. Improved signposting.  Cost œ100. Priority 4

80) Three Tuns, shared foot/cyclepath southside of Bath Rd, FP no.26, cross Montem Lane, Montem Sports Centre car park, Montem Recreation Ground streamside path.

Mostly existing, needs signposting and marking. The dual carriageway outside ex-Brookside grounds is very narrow and dangerous for cyclists, it would be useful therefore to take them off the road here by providing a cyclepath. Entrance to Montem Sports Centre does not have a pavement both sides. Could do with more cycleracks outside these facilities. Cost œ3500.  Priority 8.

81) FP no.26, shared foot/cyclepath southside of Bath Rd in front of town hall, across Ledgers Rd.Any 'A' road would be a high priority to have a cyclepath to reduce accidents and provide for heavily used routes. Cost œ800. Priority 8

81a) Junction Ledgers Rd and A4 Bath Rd, shared foot/cyclepath southside of Bath Rd, High St.

Very strategic corridor here as there is no railway crossing between the A4 and Chalvey Rd East. Current bridge over Windsor branch line is dark and intimidating and not wide enough. Roof and sides could be removed and a platform wide enough to accomadate cyclists and pedestrians built on the existing support. Wire mesh sides would improve light, visibility and security.

Mouth of old High St (western end) difficult to cross could be narrowed or have a zebra.

The long hammer head road layout outside Lloyds bank was restored to its original pattern  when the A4 was widened which was a waste. The long spur serves no purpose the area it should have been landscaped instead. Entrance to bingo hall and Kwik Fit need need bumbs to slow traffic entering and leaving. Cost œ90 000 (would have been zero if BCC had done it when they widened A4). Priority 9

82) Three Tuns, shared foot/cyclepath eastside of Tuns Lane, shared foot/cyclepath northside of Church St Chalvey, use island to cross Church St Chalvey opposite hotel, FP that starts in Damson Grove, new FP across Chalvey Recreation Ground, new island to cross High St Chalvey

83) Church St Chalvey, FP no.29, the Green, High St Chalvey.

Existing needs signposting. Cost œ100 Priority 4.

 84) FP no.27, The Fields - FP no.28, Chalvey Rd East

Existing needs security improvements eg chain link rather than closed board fencing. Cost œ3000. Priority 5

84a) King Edward St, FP no27, <access from Arthur Rd>, <access from Henry Rd>, take down fence to get through to Montem Sports Centre car park.

Mostly existing, needs security improvements. Oppurtunity missed when Montem Annex redeveloped for flats to improve and extend this network of footpaths. Cost œ5000. Priority 5

85) Junction Albert St and Windsor Rd, through bollards, Upton Park, Herschel Park NW entrance

Existing, needs signposting. Junction is very wide and difficult for cyclists to cross particulary uphill from Chalvey Rd East to Albert St. cost œ100. Priority 6

85a) Herschel Park pond, new foot/cyclepath through park extension, new island to cross Datchet Rd

Wildlife/leisure area. Should go ahead regardless of M4 plans. New path bridge over stream/spring and lighting. (œ25k developers money in kitty). Cost œ9000. Priority 9

85b) Datchet Rd, Observer offices forecourt, new foot/cyclepath across Upton Court Farm fields, (cutting across FP no.36), FP no.69 Upton Court Park.

Only a short stretch of path needed here to complete a very long leisure and strategic route from London Rd to Windsor Rd. Possible sponsors Slough Observer. Cost œ3000. Priority 9

85d) Herschel Park NE entrance, Upton Park, cross Mere Rd at pelican, cross grass patch, Albert St, Park St, Osborne St.

Existing, needs signposting. Pavement needs building down Upton Park. Developer already commited to do so. Cost œ2000. Priority 7.

86) Herschel Park SW entrance, FP section of Vale Grove, Vale Grove, Windsor Rd

Existing needs signposting. Sensitive wildlife. Cost œ100. Cyclists to walk. Priority 5

87) Vale Grove, shared foot/cyclepath eastside of Windsor Rd,shared foot/cyclepath eastside of Slough Rd, Willow Brook.Existing, just needs signposting, marking, and dropped kerbs at intervals on the Windsor Rd. Cost œ500. Priority 6.

 88) Windsor Rd near M4 bridge, FP no.37, The Myrke

Existing, needs surfacing and signposting. Cost œ4000. Priority 5.

 89) Slough High St, Alpha St South, Albert St, Castle St, shared foot/cyclepath southside of Mere Rd, Datchet Rd, FP no.78, The Myrke, cross the borough boundary, FP no.36,  new island to cross Pococks Lane, FP no.36 Eton College grounds, Eton College courtyard, Eton High St

Mostly existing. Pococks Lane very dangerous at present - island would slow traffic. Leisure and strategic route. FP no.78 threatened by M4 widening. FP no.36 threatened by Flood relief scheme. Needs signposting and lighting. Cost œ10 000. Priority 9

90) Sussex Place, Lascelles Rd by Slough Grammar School.

Existing. Strategic route to avoid A4. Developer contribution (Shirley Lodge) ? Cost œ200. Priority 6

94) London Rd, Blandford Rd South, through bollards, Blandford Road North, new traffic lights to cross Langley Rd, Middlegreen Rd, past Halkingcroft Woods, Canal.

New traffic lights to cross Langley Rd which is very dangerous. Signposting. Cost œ20 000. Priority 7

95) Kendal Close, FP, northside of canal, Stoke Rd canal basin.

Existing path poor state. Signposting from Kendal Drive. Cost œ400. Priority 8

(If the whole of the northside was made accesible then the northside could be used for fisherman and the south side for an obstacle free foot/cyclepath

96) Stoke Rd canal basin, southside towpath, <access from Bower Playing Fields>, <access from Wexham Rd>,<access from ICI>,<access from Uxbridge Rd>, <access from Goodman Park>, cross county boundary, <access from Bloom Park>,<access from Middle Green Rd>, <access from St Marys Rd>, <access from FP no.47a>, <access from Langley business Park>, <access from Langley Park Rd>, <access from Hollow Hill Lane

Existing. Will soon need resurfacing. Other improvements eg widening slightly in parts, lighting, more signposting and route maps, regular cutting back of undergrowth to keep path clear. Cost œ20 000.  Priority 7.

(If the council ran a Slough to Langley canal bus, it would keep the channel clear of weeds and attract boat users to the Slough arm which is currently under used).

97) Southside towpath, Bower Playing Fields, St Pauls Av, Stoke Rd.

Existing, needs signposting to and from town centre. Cost œ200. Priority 5

98) St Pauls Av, shared foot/cyclepath eastside Stoke Rd, William St, Brunel Way.

Section of shared foot/cyclepath from St Pauls Av to Mill St can only be built when the proposed redevelopment of this block goes ahead. Developer contribution ? Cost œ5000. Priority 9.

 99) Wellington St roundabout subway network, shared foot/cyclepath Wellington St in front of bus station, Brunel Way.

Roundabout quite dangerous particularly coming along A4 past TVU and then getting into lane to go down Windsor Rd. Barriers needed at the bottom of the subway slopes because of blind corners. Clearly marked lanes needed to seperate the cyclists. Some experimentation with markings and restrictions may be needed to minimise conflict with pedestrians. Sponsorship Crownco, Royal Bank of Scotland ? Cost œ2000. Priority 10

100) Slough railway station, shared foot/cyclepath eastside Brunel Way, <access to Tesco>, shared foot/cyclepath northside Wellington St, <access from Wellesley Rd>, across end of Wexham Rd, <access from Aldin Av North>, <access from Princes St>, new traffic lights to cross end of Uxbridge Rd, shared foot/cyclepath eastside Uxbridge Rd, <access to canal>, <access from Rochford Gardens>, cross county boudary, <access from Church Lane via footbridge>, George Green Rd.

Crossing the end of Wexham Rd is very dangerous - island should be widened to make it easier.

Strategic route to Uxbridge. Also gives access to Leisure areas eg Langley Park, Black Park.

There is an existing 60's built footpath besides the Uxbridge Rd, but it is so bumpy that cyclists do not use it hence they risk cycling  on the road which is dangerous with traffic passing at 60-80mph. Path needs to be dug up and rebuilt. Cost œ30 000. Priority 8

102) Newsweek building/opposite Wellesley Rd, shared foot/cyclepath southside of Wellington St, <access to the Observatory>, <access to Royal Mail sorting office >, across Wexham Rd. new surface crossing of  Wellington St, Uxbridge Rd.

Pavement has ample width. Postmen would be amongst the cyclists using this path. Surface crossing needed to replace existing Aldin Av subway where several people are attacked each year. A pelican crossing could be built on the existing site, or the Co-op roundabout signals could have pedestrian/cyclist crossing facilities added. This would have the long term effect of making the Diamond Rd area more attractive to live - at the moment it is cut off from the town centre and run-down. Cost œ20 000. Priority 9.

102a) Bus garage roundabout, shared foot/cyclepath southside of Wellington St, <access on foot to Queensmere>, new pelican to cross Wellington St, Wellesley Rd,

New pelican to cross Wellington St at Wellesley Rd to replace existing Stratfield Rd subway where several people are attacked each year. If the roundabout is to be signalised, then pedestrian facilities can be built in. Before the Observatory was built cyclists and pedestrians  could cut through from Newsweek House to the High St. Now you can only do that in shopping hours on foot (cycles are barred from the Observatory and Queensmere). It would be useful to restore this right of way. Developer contribution? Cost œ20 000. Priority 9

103) Shared foot/cyclepath Sussex Place, cross Yew Tree Rd at traffic lights, High St, Windsor Rd

The existing start to the Sussex Place cyclepath is slightly dangerous being on the corner of Lascelles Rd, particularly if you are travelling along the London Rd from Langley. It might be more practical to move it a few yards to the pelican crossing. There should also be a couple more dropped kerbs between here and the co-op roundabout so that the cyclist can easily come off the road when caught up in fast moving traffic. Suggest that the pedestrian and cycle traffic lights at Yew Tree road are linked to operate at the same time. Shorter 5 sec wait time. Cost œ1000. Priority 8

103a) Windsor Rd, old High St segregated cyclepath, Burlington Av.

Old High St is wide enough to accomadate a segregated cyclepath. Bollards needed to stop cars parking on path. This route is more visible and secure than going around the back of library. Developer contribution? Sponsor - Royal Bank of Scotland? Cost œ10 000. Priority 10

104) Shared foot/cyclepath Sussex Place, Nixey Close, Lascelles Park

Existing needs signposting and lighting. Cost œ2000. Priority 5

105) Granville Av, across Stoke Poges Lane, Muddy Lane FP no.58, cross boundary border, past golf course, Stoke Rd.

113) Junction Wexham Rd and Mirador Cres, FP no.6, the Frithe.

(Whole shopping area at this junction needs improving to make better visually and from a road safety point of view. Slip roads should be replaced with paved areas where shops can display their goods. Parking should be limited to just one area: at present it is all over the shot including on the pavements etc Cost œ150 000

114) Station Rd Langley, through the bollards, Meadfield Rd.

Existing. Needs signposting. Cost œ100. Priority 7.

 115) Sutton Lane, FP no.43, Common Road, Langley High St.
